A mild burning sensation may be experienced for up to two hours after a treatment session. This is easily controlled by an analgesic such as Tylenol. Aspirin or any other mediation that contains acetylsalicylic acid should be avoided Because they affect the way in which the blood clots and may encourage bruising. The VPW laser seldom causes bruising and usually leaves a slightly pink area which fades within a couple of hours. If the lesion is deep and a greater power is used a blotchy, pink, superficial welt may occur. This disappears to normal skin an hour or two after the surgery. In some instances a crust may form When the Dye laser is used a deep purple discoloration of the skin similar to a bruise is evident for 7 to 12 days after a treatment session. This fades to a brown color which may take up 6 weeks to disappear entirely. How many treatments are required? The number of treatment sessions depends on the size, location and depth of the lesion. For example, if a art wine hemangioma involves half the face and is very thick many sessions will be required to cover the extensive surface and to gradually remove the layers of vessels. Whereas, a small number of superficial vessels may only require one session. Thicker vessels in vascular lesions such as cavernous hemangiomas and facial veins respond better to the VPW laser. The chilled tip allows the laser light to dwell on the vessel for a longer period of time without causing damage to the surrounding skin. This allows the laser light to seal the vessel, eradicating the lesion Benign blood vessel tumors also being to crop up as we get older. Some people may mistake them as blemishes on their face and wonder at the appearance of large numbers of them over their torsos and limbs. They are of no medical consequence but many people like to have them removed with a vascular laser for cosmetic reasons. The red discoloration found in scars can also be reduced or removed with the VPW or Dye lasers, softening the cosmetic disability caused by the scar, particularly if it appears on the face. Radiation therapy for cancer will cause dilated blood vessels to appear on the skin of the treated area. This is particularly common on the chest after radiation is used for the treatment of breast cancer. These can be removed with the VPW or Dye lasers. Are vascular removal lasers safe? Yes, the VPW Dye lasers are safe. Because the energy from the laser beam is absorbed by the abnormal vasculature and does not affect the surrounding tissue the risk of scarring is very low. Safety goggles must be worn by the patient and the laser surgeon during the procedure to protect the eyes from the bight light. What are the possible complications associated with vascular removal lasers? Post-operative complications from treatment with the VPW or Dye lasers are very rare. However, with any surgery there are inherent risks. The potential adverse side effects from these lasers may include: scarring, crusting, thinning of the skin, hyperpigmention (a brown discoloration), hypopigmentation (loss of color) or a slight depression at the treatment site. Can anyone with a vascular lesion be treated with a vascular removal laser? There are some people who would not be good candidates for vascular laser surgery. People who are sensitive to light due to heredity, disease or medication are no candidates for this treatment. For example, seizures triggered by light or the use of blood thinning medications are contraindications for treatment with a vascular removal laser. Very dark skinned individuals tend to develop hypopigmentation (a lack of color) when treated with a vascular removal laser. This is usually temporary. What does it cost to have vascular laser surgery of the skin? The cost is dependent on the size, location and depth of the vascular lesion. Most dermatologic surgeons charge a facilities fee plus a per pulse charge for the laser on a session by session basis. A small lesion may cost only $200 whereas an extensive birthmark may cost $400 to $1500 per session.
