GUMS

No matter how nice the teeth look, if the gums are unhealthy deterioration will set in and lead to tooth loss.

Gum (periodontal) disease is the number one reason for tooth loss in the adult population.

Periodontal disease is caused by bacteria (Plaque) growing on the teeth.  A substance the bacteria releases causes the gums to become infected.

If the bacteria are not removed, the bone under the gums becomes infected, resulting in bone loss.

Eventually the tooth has so little bone holding it in place that it becomes loose and amy have to be pulled.

Since the process is slow and insidious, it is important to recognize the early signs of periodontal disease and to have the gums checked regularly in Dental specialist.

The gums re normally a coral pink color.  One of the first signs of gum disease is red gums that bleed.

If the gums bleed during normal, regular brushing or flossing, the problem is gum disease and requires a dentist’s assistance to remedy in Dental specialist.

How can gum disease be prevented?

The good news is that gum disease may be prevented by proper daily tooth care.  It is more important to brush and floss the teeth thoroughly once a day (preferably before bedtime) than quickly and poorly three times a day.

Proper cleaning should take from 5 to 10 minutes.  If any problems are experienced with brushing and flossing, they should be discussed with a dentist.

Brushing

The best technique for brushing is as follows:

  • Use a soft brush with single tufts in 2 or 3 rows in Teeth care treatment.
  • Brush systematically: start on one side of the mouth, going completely around the teeth to the other side.  Then, brush the inside of the teeth from one side to the next.
  • The brush should be angled at 45 degrees to the tooth with the bristles contacting the bottom third of the tooth.  The brush is moved in short rotary strokes, cleaning 1 or 2 teeth at a time in Teeth care treatment.
  • Brushing will remove plaque only from the outside and inside surfaces of the teeth.  In order to remove the plaque from between the teeth, they must be flossed in Dental specialist.

Dental Floss

There are two types of floss: waxed and unwaxed.  Unwaxed floss cleans teeth better, but if the floss shreds between the teeth, use waxed floss.

  • A 30 to 45 centimeter (12 to 18 inch) length of floss is wrapped around the middle finger of one hand and positioned over the tips of the index fingers.
  • The index fingers should be about 2 ½ centimeters (1 inch) apart and the floss is worked between the teeth with a slight back and forth shoe shining motion, until it passes through the contact points between the teeth in teeth care treatment.

he floss is then wrapped around the tooth, forming a C-shape, and moved up and down the tooth surface.

Once one surface is leaned, it can be wrapped around the other tooth surface to be cleaned.

The floss should then be pulled out from between the teeth.  The same procedure is repeated for all teeth
