Supermodel Alex Wek loves to drink a glass of milk, but fear not if this doesn’t appeal, as milk isn’t the best source of calcium: it doesn’t contain much magnesium, which is needed to metabolise calcium – fortified soya, goat’s or rice milk and a diet rich in seeds and leafy vegetables, will give you adequate calcium and magnesium. Here are the different types of milk and their nutritional benefits : COW’S MILK The most popular is semi skimmed, which, together with skimmed, contains slightly more calcium than full – fat ( whole ) milk and less fat. GOAT’S MILK has a softer curd and smaller fat molecules than cow’s milk, making it easier to digest. It is a good choice for those with delicate digestions or stomach ulcers but can taste a bit ‘goaty’ in the Milk in diet. RICE MILK Like Soya milk, it is 100 percent non – diary, low in fat and lactose – free. It is a good choice for vegans and those who are lactose intolerant. It is usually fortified with calcium, but has virtually no protein, so you have to get your protein sources elsewhere.
SOYA MILK Low in saturated fat and rich in protein, soya milk is a good choice for those intolerant to cow’s milk. Only drink soya milk made from the whole bean and always choose a brand that’s calcium fortified and organic to avoid genetic modification in the Milk in diet. Benifit Of Soya Milk Before you give me the Hypocrite of the Year Award for all my tofu jibes, let me just say that I still hate tofu – how anyone can enjoy eating a food that takes on the taste of whatever you’re cooking with it, rather than having its own distinct flavour, is beyond me – but some models love it, and there are other soya products that a taste fine. The fact is the humble soya bean is a nutritional giant for women, as it contains is flavones ( natural pant hormones also known as phytoestrogens ) that are vital to our health plus calcium, minerals and vitamins. It’s one of the few plants that provides a complete protein ource while being low in fat. You need only 25g (1oz) of soya protein a day to enjoy the benefits of the bean. Asian countries have worshipped soya for centuries, but until recently it was seen here as the sole property of vegetarians, who rely on it as amajor proteinsource. Benifit Of Soya Milk has obvious benefits to women – the isoflavones help protect against osteoporosis, and it can help protect against hormone – dependent cancers in the breast and ovaries. It is worth noting, however, that the toxins in soya are not completely removed by boiling but are removed through fermentation. Fermented soya includes shoyu, tamri, miso and tempeh. There’s a diverse selection of soya products to choose from in the marketplace : MISO Soyabeans fermented into a meaty paste – good for seasonings. SOYA MILK Thinner than dairy milk but not bad on cereals and muesli. Not great in tea of coffee. SOYA YOGHURTS These taste good and, being dairy- free are lactose – free. Definitely worth trying in the Benifit Of Soya Milk.
