By definition, child birth recovery begins immediately after delivery and continues for approximately six weeks or until your body has completed its adjustment and has returned to a near pre-pregnant state.

Physical Changes involved

Involution of the Uterus : This is the process of contracting of uterus to a non-pregnant size, although it will never return completely to its former, pre-pregnant size. Approximately 10 days after birth, you will no longer be able to feel the top of your uterus.
Lochia : Lochia is the vaginal discharge that you will have to experience over the next four to six weeks. It is the debris that the uterus sheds after delivery.

Breast Care after Birth

Breast care after birth - Wash your breasts and nipples with a clean piece of cloth and warm water only. Do not use soap. During shower, gently massage your breasts, starting near your armpit and moving toward the nipple to help prevent clogged milk ducts. Air dry your nipples after your bath and after breastfeeding. Wear a well-fitting, supportive nursing bra during the day and at night. If the nursing bra has a plastic insert or liner, remove it at night to allow fresh air to circulate around your nipples.

Postpartum Nutrition

While you are breastfeeding, you should follow a diet rich in protein (meat, fish, eggs or legumes). Have at least four servings of fresh fruits or vegetables each day. Your diet should also include two to four servings of milk or milk products every day.

Sex after pregnancy

It is a myth that sex after pregnancy does not happen. It does, but without proper care, it can lead to trouble. Initially, vaginal soreness and sheer exhaustion are likely to take a toll. If you're in the mood for sex, here's what you need to know about sex after pregnancy.

After the baby is born, how soon can I have sex?
Whether you give birth through vagina or by C-section, your body will need time to heal. Many doctors recommend waiting six weeks before resuming intercourse. This allows time for the cervix to close, postpartum bleeding to stop, and any tears or repaired lacerations to heal.

The other important time line is set by your only. Some women feel ready to resume sex within a few weeks of giving birth while others need more time. It depends on the biological factors that varies from one women to another. Factors such as fatigue, postpartum blues and changes in body image may take a toll on your sex drive.

If it will hurt?

Your vagina may appear dry and tender, especially if you're breast-feeding. To ease out any sense of discomfort, take it slow. Start with cuddling, kissing or massage. Gradually build the intensity of stimulation. If vaginal dryness is causing a problem, use a lubricating cream or gel. Try different positions to take pressure off any sore areas and control penetration. Tell your partner what feels good and what doesn't.

Will it feel different?
After several vaginal deliveries, decreased muscle tone in the vagina may cause reduction in pleasurable friction during sex. To tone your pelvic floor muscles, remember to do exercises that are oriented towards pelvic. Tighten your pelvic muscles as if you're stopping your stream of urine. Try it for five seconds at a time, four or five times in a row. Repeat throughout the day. You will definitely feel the change and comfort after a week or so.

In case you are too tired to have sex?
Caring for a newborn is very exhausting. If you're too tired to have sex at bedtime, say it to your partner. But that doesn't mean your sex life is over. You may find time for lovemaking early in the morning or during your baby's nap. Feed your baby first to extend the time you and your partner have together.
