Muscle relaxant injections and ophthalmologists use an injectable toxin known as Botox (botulinum exotoxin) to prevent muscles from contracting in compulsive eye squinting and to weaken strong eye muscles that induce wandering eyes in children. Muscle relaxant injections and the procedure takes only a few minutes and consists of injecting the toxin into the muscle of the offending area. It causes slight discomfort, a sense of burning as the solution enters the muscle. This only lasts for the length of the injection. Within 48 hours, the muscle begins to weaken, and within 7 to 10 days its movement is completely lost. The muscle is not damaged; it is just temporarily immobilized in Cosmetic surgeons. How long will the Botox last? Muscle movement gradually returns over 4 to 6 months, depending on the amount of toxin used. However as the body adjusts to the idea that those muscles are not available for use, the learned behavior of muscle contraction in response of a stimuli is forgotten.
