The lime is believed to be the native of India, where it has been grown since remote times. Arab traders are believed to have taken it to Eastern Mediterranean and Western countries.

 It has since spread throughout the tropics, where it is the most commonly cultivated species of the acid citrus. There are many varieties of limes. They are, classified into two main groups, the sweet and the acid limes.

The sweet limes contain a higher proportion of sugar but they have an insipid taste and are not considered of high nutritive value.

 Therefore, they are not grown on great scale. Acid or sour limes, are extensively cultivated as their importance as food and medicine has been recognized for centuries. The two most popularly known varieties are Pati and Kagzi niboo.

Acid limes are excellent source of free citric acid, natural sugar, calcium, phosphorus, and vitamin C. It contains by far more vitamin C than the lemon.

 It is generally used for its juice. The best way to use it is to have with water. The lime juice also forms an indispensable ingredient of salads.

Limes are generally mistaken for lemons, but they represent two varieties of the same. The lime is smaller in size than the lemon, with a thin smooth skin. 

It has sweet smell and contains less juice than the lemon. Limes should not be used in excess. The alkaline salts of the lime juice neutralize the free uric acid and precipitate it.

Its excessive use may cause the formation of renal calculi. Excessive sucking of fresh lime is also bad for teeth as the acid damages the delicate enamel of the teeth and makes them sensitive.

Its excessive use weaken digestion and improverishes the blood. Treating swollen gums, In India the juice of fresh limes is being used in medicine form ancient books. Cutting limes after reciting certain Mantras is considered an effective method for driving away evil spirits. Charaka and Sharangdhara, the two famous physicians have mentioned about the therapeutic value of lime in various diseases of bones and joints.

Bleeding Piles
 A small lime should be slit into two portion and sprinkled with rock slat powder inside.  The lime is then shaked inside the mouth and the juice slowly consumed. Treating swollen gums, Lime juice, with its antihaemorrhagic properties and rock salt rich in magnesium sulphate, stops bleeding and help good bowel movement and gradually shrink the pile masses.

Common Cold

Vitamin C of lime juice increases resistance, reduces toxicity and the course of the illness.  A glass of diluted lime juice prepared in warm water and a teaspoonful of honey is added, is good remedy for cold and dry cough.

Constipation

The lime juice is of great value in constipation, when it is taken as the first thing in the morning in a glass of warm water.  In chronic cases, it helps remove the disorder by promoting biliary secretion from liver.

Cystitis

In the inflammation of urinary bladder, a teaspoonful of lime juice should be put in 200 gm, of boiling water.  It should then be allowed to cool and 50 gm of this water should be given every two hours.  It gives relief to burning sensation and also stops bleeding in cystitis.
