Stress is a very common word today, used alomost daily by millions of people the world over. It is not possible to provide the exact number or percentage of people suffering from 'stress related diseases' in india, their age break-up, duration of each episode, length of time since they have been suffering etc. But it is definitely a wide spread phenomenon.

One can draw this conclusion because of a manifold increasing in the tranquillizers in the recent years. (World sales figure for them stood at a whopping 65,000 tonnes per year)

Today, more than two third of the patients in general medicine comprise those suffering from stress related diseases, i.e.
hypertension, peptic ulcer headache, migrain, insomnia, acute myocardian infaction, diabetics mellitus, bronchial asthma, hyperacidit, anxiety neurosis, depression and many more diseases which you can commonly hear of.

Hear i would like to emphasise upon one important fact and that is - all stress related diseases and many more can deinitely be terned as stress-related disease, as they are either caused by and / or accentuated by the stress.

Infact earlier manifestations can take a variety of forms such as irritability, anger, easy probocation, increased heart rate, nervousness, increased sweating, lack of interest in usaual playful activities, over - eating, loss of appetite, apathy towards family and business, and so on.

Most of the time you are completely unaware of the fat that you are a victim of stress and strain. Your increased smoking, increased thirsty, or desire for tobacco chewing, tea or coffee drinking are difinite signs of stress.

Without physical health you can't be completely happy, and without mental happiness you can't be completely healthy. Health is a positive state; not just the absence of a negative one.

It's not only the absence of disease. For too long now traditional Western medicine has treated illness as only a disease: an enemy that attacks you and needs to be counter-attacked; but in reality it's nothing more than an imbalance in the natural harmony of body and mind. True healing means restoring that balance, and true health means keeping it

What exactely is the medical meaning of the word 'stress?' As Dr. Hans selye, the father of stress research, has aptly said in the earlypart of this century (1936) it is the non-specific, conventional, animal response of the body to any demand made on it. The basic purpose of which is to prepare the body for the flight or fight.
