Antioxidant Rush

antioxidant BRAIN SAVER High levels of the powerful antioxidant urate in the blood and

cerebrospinal fluid are linked with slower progression of Parkinson's disease (PD),

according to research conducted at the MassGeneral Institute for

Neurodegenerative Diseases (MGH-MIND) and the Harvard School of Public Health

— a finding that establishes urate as the only known biomarker for PD.

Results of the investigation may point the way to new strategies to combat PD, a

neurological disorder in which brain cells that produce the neurotransmitter

dopamine are destroyed, leading to tremors, rigidity, and impairment of movement.

The researchers found that the one-fifth of study participants with the highest blood

urate levels had a 36 per cent lower risk of needing to begin PD drug levodopa

treatment in the two-year study period than partici lowest blood urate levels.

Similarly, concentrations of urate in the cerebrospinal fluid were also inversely related to risk for PD progression, according to a report

published in Archives of Neurology.

Although the precise mechanism behind the effects of urate on PD progression is not clear, it is possible that the antioxidant may her

oxidative stress that is know' play a role in the destruction dopamine-producing brain ci according to the study's seni author, Michael

Schwarzschl PhD, of MGH-MIND.

Urate can be derived from diet (it is found in foods such organ meats, mushrooms, sl asparagus, cauliflower, sardi herring, as well as

beer and alcoholic beverages), or thrc supplements of the urate-prE inosine, which increases blo of the antioxidant.

However, because high le urate have been linked to risk for hypertension, corona disease, stroke, kidney ston, and gout, the authors cautio

the benefits of elevating ural concentration to very high le must be weighed against po adverse effects.

An antioxidant is a molecule capable of inhibiting the oxidation of other molecules.

Oxidation is a chemical reaction that transfers electrons from a substance to an oxidizing agent.

Oxidation reactions can produce free radicals. In turn, these radicals can start chain reactions.

When the chain reaction occurs in a cell, it can cause damage or death.

When the chain reaction occurs in a purified monomer, it produces a polymer resin, such as a plastic, a synthetic fiber, or an oil paint film.

Antioxidants terminate these chain reactions by removing free radical intermediates, and inhibit other oxidation reactions.

They do this by being oxidized themselves, so antioxidants are often reducing agents such as thiols, ascorbic acid or polyphenols.

Antioxidants are widely used as ingredients in dietary supplements and have been investigated for the prevention of diseases such as cancer, coronary heart disease and even altitude sickness.

Although initial studies suggested that antioxidant supplements might promote health, later large clinical trials did not detect any benefit and suggested instead that excess supplementation is harmful.

In addition to these uses of natural antioxidants in medicine, these compounds have many industrial uses, such as preservatives in food and cosmetics and preventing the degradation of rubber and gasoline.
