Changes in Life or Routine

During pregnancy, women may be constipated because of hormonal changes or because the uterus compresses the intestine. Aging may also affect bowel regularity, because a slower metabolism results in less intestinal activity and muscle tone. In addition, people often become constipated when traveling, because their normal diet and daily changes in life or routine are disrupted.

Gas and Flatulence After High-Fat Meals

Carbon dioxide is produced in the small intestine when bicarbonate is released to neutralize stomach acid and fat during meals. Eating high-fat meal can generate a large amount of carbon dioxide.

Eating Foods that Produce Gas

Certain types of food are inherently gas-producing. The section includes beans, cabbage, onions, brussels sprouts, cauliflower, broccoli, fluffy wheat products such as bread, apples, peaches, pears, prunes, corn, oats, potatoes, milk, ice cream, and soft cheese.

Treatment Strategies

  • Self-awareness of aerophagia. Conscious breathing.
  • Relaxation techniques to reduce anxiety.
  • Avoid lying down after eating. Gas from the stomach passes into the intestines more easily in this position.
  • Chew food carefully. Carbohydrate digestion begins in the mouth..
  • Consult your doctor

Herbal Remedies

  • Peppermint Pour 1 cup boiling water over 1 tablespoon chopped dried leaves. Steep for 5 to 10 minutes; strain, then drink warm three to four times a day. Tinctures and oil of peppermint may vary in their concentration.
  • Fennel Fennel tea bags may be of little value unless the seeds have been crushed. Make fresh tea and drink before or after meals. Alternatively, chew 1/4 teaspoon seeds.
  • Dill Chew 1/2 teaspoon dill seeds.
  • Anise Mix a few drops of aniseed oil into 1 cup warm water. Drink solution before or after meals.
  • Caraway seeds The volatile oil components of caraway seeds work as a carminative by promoting gastric secretions and stimulating appetite.
