UTI, Bladder Infection

A bladder infection is also called 'urinary tract infection' (UTI) by most medical representatives. It's a bacterial infection that affects any part of the urinary tract. Urine contains a variety of fluids. salts, and waste products and it normally does not have bacteria in it. When bacteria get into the bladder and multiply in the urine, it causes a urinary tract infection.

The most common type of UTI is a bladder infection, also known as cystitis. It literally means an inflammation of the bladder. The other kind of UTI is a kidney infection, which is also known as pyelonephritis. This kind of infection can be serious. If treated quickly the kidney is
most often not damaged permanently.

There are several ways bacteria can get into the urethra. During sexual intercourse, the bacteria in the vaginal area can be pushed into the urethra, which causes irritation inside the bladder. Any-time the vaginal area is rubbed, bacteria can be pushed into the urethra. You can get a bladder infection from oral sex as well.

Vaginal Infections

Vaginal infections, or vaginitis, is the most common medical concerns women have in the area of their reproductive organs. Vaginitis is an inflammation of the vagina that creates discharge, odor, irritation, or itching. Women use a variety of over-the-counter medications to treat the itching, discharge, and discomfort of these conditions.

Some vaginal infections are transmitted through sexual contact, but others such as yeast infections probably are not. Vaginitis often is caused by infections, which create distress and discomfort. Some infections are associated with more serious diseases.

Symptoms

Vaginal discharge, itching, and burning are common symptoms of the various forms of vaginitis. Sexual excitement and emotional stress have both been associated with a normal vaginal discharge. This discharge is a clear, mucus-like secretion and easy identifiable.

You may also have burning during urination or itching around the outside of the vagina, or both. Some women with BV have no symptoms at all.

Prevention

Basic prevention would include using condoms, limiting the number of sex partners, do not douche, and use all the medicine prescribed for treatment of BV, even if your symptoms go away.

Treatment

Major treatment is based on the organism causing the infection. Depending on the cause of the infection, your health care provider may prescribe vaginal suppositories or antibiotics (as pills or a shot). Treatment varies depending on which form of vaginitis you are suffering from, the severity of infection, duration of infection, recurrence of infection, and whether you are pregnant.
