FEAR – FEAR OF FLYING, FEAR OF TRYING

Fear is an extremely ageing emotion. Not only does it age you through the stress of worry, it does so by giving you an aged mindset. Someone who is unwilling to try new things or to open themselves up to new experience is, by definition, old no matter what their age or how youthful their body looks.

Fear holds you back, fear makes you bury your head in the sand, fear prevents you from living life to the fullest.

Marjorie, a widow in her early fifties, had spent her whole life saying no to traveling anywhere that involved flying. Although she would pore over holiday brouchers and dream of seeing exotic places, she always said no to such adventures, and her husband had humoured her phobia.

After he died her children insisted she come with them or a trip to America. They filled her with gin and tonic (very bad idea –see Jet setting below) and prlonked her on the plane between them, holding her hands, Marjorie loved the flight and has now

been traveling the world, enjoying her new found wings. On her last trip to Greece she met a young man she brought home to meet her children.

Not quite a Shirley Valentine story, this one had a happy ending, because Marjorie didn’t give up her home and family for him but just enjoyed having a fling. She realized that fear of flying and of trying all sorts of things had her back for too long.

Her children, not quite sure what to make of the young Greek while he was in her life, had to agree that she began to look, and act, younger and was much more fun to be with.

Good and healthy habits and It is sad when fear of falling, or fear of being attacked, keeps older people indoors in front of the television when they should be out enjoying life.

But if you keep working on your balance (through exercise) and have a balance outlook on life, you won’t be so likely to succumb to such fears. Franklin Delano Roosevelt memorably observed that ‘The only thing we have to fear is feat itself’.

That may not be completely true, but fear is certainly to be feared, and will rob you of as many years of happiness as the illness or accidents you fear.

FIBROIDS
