There’s nothing like taste and smell to roll back times and places for us – food is the trigger for our memories. Favorite tastes make us feel safe and loved. It’s why we often eat too many things we shouldn’t, because it makes us think of home.

I’m not talking  post hang over carb fest here, but about the food that was cooked for you as a child, the manner of eating, the associations of family, heritage and that sense of belonging that comes from every

mouthful of Healthy food models we feel familiar with. I still feel a wave of nastlgia whenever I eat my favorite childhood meal of scrambled eggs on buttery toast.

No one could quite cook them like my late, wonderful mum, especially when followed by some butterscotch  instant whip decorated with mandarin orange segments and presented to me on a racing –green wooden tray with reassuring side panels.

Mum had a great way with trays. It was how she made mealtime sense out of the chaotic ebb and flow of feeding endless people at different times.

When my father died and money was tight, she took in lodgers – or PGs (paying guests )as the preferred to call them. She styled each tray to suit its recipient ; with the first summer rose form the garden.

She was the latte of human kindness, and if it’s no surprise that in a recent poll it was rice pudding, ice cream and mashed potatoes that topped the list of Brit’s favorite comfort foods, all nice and creamy – just like mothers milk.

Told we can’t I have these oral security blankets any more, we eventually rebel. Which is why diets don’t work.

Having a nutrient packed diet means you can handle a moderate amount of unhealthy treats.

But if you’re under weight or over weight, o drinking too much alcohol or coffee, the toxic load will be too great to eat any junk. Perversely, that’s when you’ll crave it most. The key to using  flexible restraint successfully lies in never cheating on the deal you make with yourself.

It means not snacking randomly between meals and knowing that too many take a ways and pre – prepared food will drain your vitality and add on the pounds. It means making rules that are your vitality and add on the pounds.

It means making rules that are yours alone; eating less on Tuesday when you over do it on Monday ; cutting out bread after lunch ; swapping a whole bar of chocolate for a couple of pieces ; learning to drizzle things in oil or cream instead of drowning them; having that huge hunk of cheese you craved instead of a meal, not as well as Realising that if you eat huge dinners every night with all the trimmings, you’ll get fat.
