Implants
Dental implants and are a means of securing a denture or bridge to the bone. Implants are placed into the jaw bone and the bridge is fixed onto the implant. There are many different implant systems, but the osseointegrated (joined bone) system has the highest success rate, is the most predictable, and rarely fails.
How are dental implants placed?
The steps involved in an implant are as follows:
In the jaw bone, 4 to 6 small titanium fixtures resembling screws are implanted. The procedure takes about 2 hours and is performed under local or general anesthetic.Over a period of 3 to 6 months, the jaw bone fuses to these titanium fixtures, forming a stable biological bond. This process is called osseointegration.
After this biological bonding has occurred, titanium abutments are attached to the fixtures. This second stage of the surgical procedure takes about 1 hour.
About 2 weeks later, impressions, bite registrations, tooth selections, and bridge fittings are undertaken in Dental implants.
Finally, a fixed bridge is attached to the abutments with gold screws. The final bridge requires the same care given to natural teeth.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of dental implants?
The ability to chew foods properly and efficiently without discomfort is the most important advantage. As well, there is no longer concern over losing a denture at an awkward moment. The cost, however, is high.
The surgical portion alone will cost between $5,000 to $7,000 and the bridge another $5,000 to $7,000. In addition, the success rate is not 100%. Implants occasionally fail and have to be removed. In some cases, titanium fixtures may be visible at the gum line when smiling in Tooth care treatments .
Crooked Teeth
Ever increasing numbers of adults are undergoing orthodontic treatment for poorly aligned teeth, crowding, cross bites, and missing or crooked teeth. Cosmetic surgery is not a substitute for orthodontics but should be harmonized with orthodontics and other dental care to achieve an esthetically pleasing result.
Tooth care treatments and the orthodontist adjusts tooth alignment using braces to obtain an acceptable bite and an esthetically pleasing smile. The steps involved are as follows:
A complete diagnosis of the problem is the first step.
Preliminary dental work, including restorative work, fillings, and gum tissue therapy must be completed before braces can be applied. Some tooth extraction may be necessary before braces are fitted on the teeth.
Braces are placed, and a series of scheduled adjustments are made during the time the braces are worn. The newer braces are less obvious than the “mouth of metal” worn in the past. The length of time the braces are worn varies realignment required.
The braces are removed and a retainer is provided to control tooth movement. It may be necessary to wear this over a period of 3 to 18 months in Tooth care treatments .
Depending on the extent of procedure necessary, braces cost anywhere from $2,500 to $5,500.
