One is used more in extensive reconstructive surgery than in cosmetic enhancement surgery.

An incision is made either just under the lower eyelashes or through the mouth along the upper portion of the gums. 

A pocket is created between the cheekbone lining and the subcutaneous tissue. 

As with chin implants, the size of the pocket determines the size of the implant. 

In turn, the size of the pocket is determined by facial structure and esthetic goals. 

Once the implant is in place, the incision is closed and a pressure dressing is usually applied over the implant to control swelling and bruising. 

The dressing is removed after one to two days, although swelling and bruising take about 2 weeks to subside in Facial Structure.

Do the cheeks hurt after surgery?

Mild discomfort is felt initially due to swelling and pressure from the implant.  As the swelling subsides so does the discomfort.  Mild painkillers are effective for controlling discomfort.

What are the possible complications with this procedure?

As with chin implants, sensation over the cheeks may temporarily be affected due to pressure on the nerves supplying the area.  Normal sensation will usually return once the swelling has subsided.  It is extremely rare that sensation in the area is permanently altered.

Extrusion or expulsion of the implant is also a rare occurrence and is associated with a pocket that is too small, or an unexpected infection.

If the implant is poorly positioned, it can be adjusted or replaced through the original incision in Facial Structure.

The price ranges from $1,500 to $3,000.  Plastic surgeons and oral surgeons perform cheek implant surgery.
