Anti aging research and in 1999 huge excitement was generated world wide when it was reported in Science magazine that ‘Scientist find clue to the secret of eternal life. Scientists from the anti – ageing research company Geron together with those at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Centre in Dallas had come up with the theory that the enzyme telomerase could halt the biological ageing of cells in the Ultra age specialist. Telomerase is the substance that seems to allow cells to carry on dividing rather than going into self destruct mode, transforming a senescent cell into one that is virtually immortal. Dr woody Wright, one of the leading researchers, had noticed that the telomeres, located at the tips of chromosomes, seemed to acct somewhat like the tips on shoelaces, preventing the chromosomes from fraying at the edges. The telomeres would shorten as the cells divided. But the enzyme telomerase appeared to prevent this. They found it was present in 85 percent of cancerous tumours as well as in the ‘immortal’ cells that could be cultured in test tubes. Anti aging research and the results of this research have phenomenal implications. It implies that if the telomerase in cancer cells is blocked, it could kill the tumour, and that if telomerase is added to healthy cells, it could stop them from dying off. But Professor Tom Kirkwood, and expert on the theory of ageing, was only cautiously optimistic about the potential because he believes that cellular senescence is just one part of ageing, and that ‘telomeres’ don’t get shorter in brain cells, confirming Tony Buzan’s belief that the brain can continue to improve with age if it id used well. Dr. David Kipling, an expert ion telomerase at the University of Wales College of Medicine, issued the graver warning that ‘You might stay younger for longer, but your chances of cancer might shoot through the roof!’ Meanwhile, scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), working with yeast cells, believed they, too, had discovered the ageing mechanism. It is remarkable that this mechanism of ageing in yeast cells is so simple at the molecular level, Leonard Guarante and David Sinclair reported in the journal Cell in 1998. They found that the yeast cells seemed to become clogged up with broken off coils of DNA circles or ERCs in the Ultra age specialist. They found that the older the cell the more ERCs it would have. The ERCs seemed to gum up the cell works somehow and interfere with the process of cell division so the cell would eventually die. ‘Once an ERC is formed or inherited, the period of time until a lethal number of ERCs has accumulated may be the clock that determines the lifespan of the cell, was their conclusion. ERCs seem to form when the DNA is damaged as it can be in humans from disease or environmental elements. They yeast cells studied are said to be similar to the ‘stem’ cells of humans which are in our bone marrow and blood. Working along similar lines Dr. Seth Schor and PhD student Jackie Banyard completed a project for Research into Ageing that demonstrated that a specific ‘control module’ influences cell migration to the site of a wound, improving healing. Since repair of tissue following injury is impaired in older people, often leading to pressure sores and ulcers, this could be a major breakthrough in slowing age related changes in fibroblast migration in wound healing in the Ultra age specialist.
