Make Up Process

Base make ups should be applied in such a way that the makeup will not gather in the creases, furrows, and wrinkles of the face as this will accentuate these problems.

Concealers and cover-ups properly applied under a base foundation, can help to minimize the impact of wrinkles.

Dark colors cause fine line to recede visually and to become less obvious, while lighter colors make them appear more prominent. On the other hand, deeper furrows and wrinkle creases may remain shadowed.

Light-reflective highlighting creams and carefully feathered opaque covering creams can minimize the appearance of these creases.

Blush: Rouges, if oil-based, can plug up pores, whereas powder blushes do not tend to cause skin problems. This is also the case with color products such as eye shadows, liners, and mascara.

Blush highlights the attractive contours of the face and brightens a pale complexion. Powder, as a finishing tough over foundation, and blush will take the shine off the skin.

This will serve to de-emphasize the shadows caused by creases and furrows. Loose, translucent power is usually recommended, as it leaves a smooth finish and allows the underlying color of the skin to be seen in the base make up.

Eye Make up:

Eyes are a focal point and the way in which makeup is applied can either draw attention to the signs of aging or subdue them. When selecting an eye shadow, choose a product which will not gather in the wrinkled skin of the eyelid; for example, pressed powder eye shadows versus creams.

Matte colors are better than frosted shades because they do not accentuate redundant eyelid skin. Eye make up and the neural, softer colors in shadows, eyeliners, and mascaras will add definition to the contour of eyes without emphasizing the signs of aging. Base make up and Curling the eyelashes and defining the eyebrows will give a fresher, younger look to Eye make up.

If your wear glasses, take into consideration the effect the lenses have on your eyes as your apply your makeup. Glasses which correct nearsightedness make the eyes look small, whereas the opposite is true in the case of glasses which correct farsightedness.

Lipstick: The lips also change with time. They lose their definition as the dental structure changes and fine lines eventually appear around the lips from constant muscle pull. Lipstick tends to ‘bleed’ into these creases, further accentuating these lines. To combat this problem with makeup, apply a moisturizing cream such as Elizabeth Arden’s Lip Fix to the lips and surrounding skin before applying your foundation. This will seal the fine lines, preventing the lipstick from bleeding. Add definition to your lips by using a solid lip liner along the natural outline of your lips, and then apply matching lipstick to the entire surface of the lips.

Permanent Coloration: This process is similar to tattooing, where permanent color is imbedded into the skin to highlight lip lines and eyebrows, repigment areas of hypopigmentation, or soften the impact of scars. Allergic reactions of the dyes may occur, so test sites should be done before proceeding.

When colors are selected carefully and the technique is performed with sterility and a steady hand the results can be quite flattering. Unfortunately, there are no standards for training. It is wise to seek references and determine the level of training and experience of the operator.

The results are very difficult to reverse if an error is made or you do not like the outcome. Pigment removal lasers can be used to remove permanent makeup if it does not contain ferric oxide, which is common in permanent makeup preparations. Ferric oxide will turn back when exposed to laser light. A better alternative to lasers is to introduce tannic acid into the unwanted color using a micropigmentation implant technique. This agent gradually bleaches out the mistake.

A note about the personnel at cosmetic counters:

They are there to sell cosmetics. As a rule, they cannot determine skin types, jot identify skin problems and how they should be corrected. The company they represent has trained them in techniques to market, apply and sell their specific cosmetic and skin care line. If you are troubled by your skin, see a dermatologist.
